Dear VIS members, partners and friends,
In recent days, Typhoon No. 3 (also known as Super Typhoon Yagi) has made landfall in the northern provinces of our country, causing severe damage. The typhoon, the strongest to hit Vietnam in decades, and the subsequent torrential rains, floods, landslides, and bridge collapse had left 146 people dead or missing as of 13:00 on September 10. In agriculture, nearly 150,000 hectares of rice paddies, mainly in Hai Duong, Bac Giang, and Haiphong, were submerged, while 27,000ha of crops and 11,000ha of fruit trees were damaged. Nearly 1,600 aquaculture cages were swept away, primarily in Quang Ninh. Additionally, flooding on the Red River in Phu Tho caused the collapse of Phong Chau Bridge. Tens of thousands of houses in Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Bac Giang were submerged by up to 1.5m of water, with over 48,000 houses damaged.
Houses are submerged in flood after typhoon Yagi hit Yen Bai province, northwestern Vietnam on Sunday, Sep. 8, 2024.Thousands of people are in urgent need of assistance. In response to the call from the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee, the Vietnamese Intellectual Society in the UK and Ireland (VIS) is calling on VIS members, partners and friends to join hands and contribute from afar to support our fellow citizens in overcoming this hardship.
